Espiral Vinho Verde
This is one of my absolute favorite summer wines. So of course, an 85 degree day in April is the perfect time to drink it and pretend that it already is summer. It is such a refreshing wine – a little bit sparkly and a tiny bit of tartness makes me feel like this wine does a little tap dance with my taste buds. It’s the perfect wine to serve with some seafood – we had it with this Peppery Pasta with Shrimp and Arugula. It also makes a great appetizer wine to complement some fruit and cheese, although I’m quite certain you’d want to continue drinking it straight through dinner. It’s not particularly sweet, but it certainly doesn’t have the face puckering qualities of a dry wine.
The literal translation of Vinho Verde is green wine, but in this case it is a referring to a very young wine. Vinho Verdes are Portuguese wines and are meant to be consumed within one year of bottling. I’ve started seeing them on more and more restaurant menus lately, including two of my very favorite restaurants in Winston. It’s one of my favorite wines to get when I’m just meeting friends out for happy hour drinks and I have to say it pairs perfectly with people watching and gossiping from a sidewalk table.
Tasting Notes:
Wine Name: Espiral Vinho Verde
Grape: White, Vinho Verde
Origin: Portugal
Price: $3.99 at Trader Joe’s (I know! I said I’d do grocery store wines… I promise to pick up some Vinho’s at a grocery store + review them. This one was just calling my name!)
General impression: slightly sparkling, tart, apple
Recommendations: a summer wine, serve with seafood, serve as appetizer
Would you buy again? YES!
i love this wine! Grant and Anna introduced me to it! It’s $4 at Trader Joes???? NICE! I paid double that at Camino, I think.
Yes!! A good find at TJ’s. Broadbent is a similar one and Camino often carries that too – both yummy.
I LOVE this one! Have you tried Gazela Vinho Verde from Total Wine? It’s similar and is $7.99. It also has one of the best wine labels!
I will look for it! I LOVE pretty wine labels. 🙂
I have some of this in my refrigerator, just waiting for some warm weather! Love your new blog
Thanks Pat! I know a certain retired teacher who would probably happy come over and share that bottle with you any day. 🙂
Sounds perfect for this summer!
Porch drinking wine for sure!
Mmm! This sounds pretty tasty! Another to add to my “notes”!
Yea! You’ll love the little sparkle to it!
